My #1 Best Selling White Wine All Time
Without question one of my best-selling wines is Ogier’s Cotes Du Rhone Blanc “Artesis”. It’s all about the Viognier, I’m convinced, as this has one of the most pronounced aromatic profiles, followed by the most exciting flavors you’ll ever taste in the for $18! As with its stablemates, the grapes for this perennial overachiever are grown on terraces of pebbles on clay, resulting in perfectly ripe grapes and a clean, carefree harvest. If you’re one of the few who haven’t tried this, consider this your open invitation.
Few Rhône Valley producers can compare to the history and pedigree of Ogier. The family name dates to 800 A.D. when “Ogier the Dane” came to fight with Charlemagne’s soldiers in the Basque country, and on his way back home, settled in southeastern France’s Massif Central region. Antoine Ogier, a distant descendant of Ogier the Dane, entered the wine business in 1859, purchasing a cooperage and establishing “OGIER” as a wine producer in the nearby Rhône Valley.
After more than 160 years, Ogier has grown to become one of the leading producers in the Rhône Valley. Most of its land holdings are in the Southern Rhône area producing wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Lirac. The Estate also makes small but exceptional bottlings from parcels within the most notable appellations of the Northern Rhône – Crozes-Hermitage and Côte Rôtie. Ogier’s wines are an ode to finesse, elegance, and freshness.
Producer notes: The color is light and crystalline, very pure with discreet green reflections. Then comes the rich and complex nose expressing the plurality of grape varieties. Exotic notes meet citrus fruits, which blend with apricot and white peach and floral notes, finishing with a white pepper lift. The mouth balances the expression of the fruit, the freshness, and the roundness typical of our southern Côtes-du-Rhone. The delicate touch of wildflowers in the final brings an extra dimension to the tasting. Bravo!
